I'm Wide Awake, It's Mornin'

The sun came up with no conclusions
Flowers sleepin' in their beds
The city cemetary's hummin'
I'm wide awake, it's mornin'

I have my drugs, I have my woman
they keep away my loneliness
My parents, they have their religion
But sleep in seperate houses

I read the body count out of the paper
And now it's written all over my face
No one ever plans to sleep out in the gutter
Sometimes that just the most comfortable place

So I'm drinkin, breathin, writin, singin
Every day I'm on the clock
My mind races with all my longings
But can't keep up with what I got

And so I hope I don't sound too ungrateful
Well, history gave modern man
A telephone to talk to strangers
Machine guns and a camera lens

So when you're asked to fight a war thats over nothing
It's best to join the side thats gonna win
No ones sure how all of this got started
But we're gonna make 'em God damn certain how it's gonna end

Oh yah we will, oh yah we will!

Well I could have been a famous singer
If I had someone else's voice
But failures always sounded better
Let's fuck it up boys, make some noise!

The sun came up with no conclusins
Flowers sleepin' in their beds
The city cemetary's hummin'
I'm wide awake, it's mornin'!

-Bright Eyes "Road to Joy"

______

I think we are still trying to judge ourselves by the standards of the generation before us.
We'll be succesful when we have a bigger car and house than those belonging to the succesful 40-somethings we know.
We'll be proper femenists when we acomplish everything left on the To Do List of 40-something women.
We'll good parents when we finally find the solution to balancing home and career so that we can to do both to the max.
Where buying is good, but selling is better, and not needing anything from anyone is best.
When we scientifically apply post-modernism then we will be enlightened.
Only when we have pinstripes and world power, but peace and a healthy environment as well.
We'll be 40-something with wrinkles and high blood preasure, but botox and diovan as well.
And we won't make choices, And we'll have it all.

    *sigh* Oh my...

I like it though. It's a fascinating way of looking at our generation and I believe, an accurate one.

*sigh* The really sad thing is that I truly WANT all of those things! :P
